Aluminum up front, steel behind it

Like most modern BMWs, the X5's hood and front fenders are aluminum for weight savings, while the doors, roof and rear body stay steel. The aluminum panels get the slower, heat-controlled pass described on our aluminum and EV page; the steel panels repair the standard way.

Why the character lines matter

BMW's design language relies on sharp, defined creases running the length of the car. A dent that sits across one of those lines is more visible to the eye than the same dent on a flat panel, and pulling it back requires matching the line exactly, not just flattening the surrounding metal. That precision is what separates a clean PDR repair from one you can still see in the right light.
